The Memphis Police Department said it has permanently deactivated its Scorpion Unit following the death of Tyre Nichols. "In the process of listening intently to the family of Tyre Nichols, community leaders, and the uninvolved officers who have done quality work in their assignment, it is in the best interest of all to permanently deactivate the SCORPION Unit,” the department said in a statement Saturday. “The officers currently assigned to the unit agree unreservedly with this next step. All five of the officers were members of Scorpion, which stands for Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods. They were fired by the police department and charged with Nichols' murder.
Three people were arrested in the death of an 11-year-old girl who was killed in a drive-by shooting as she walked home from a nearby corner store, Syracuse, New York, police said. Brexialee Torres-Ortiz had left her home on Jan. 16 to buy a carton of milk for her family. She was returning home when the suspects allegedly opened fire from a car, targeting a 19-year-old boy. The third suspect, an unidentified 16-year-old boy, was arrested in Lincolndale, New York, with the assistance of state police, authorities in Syracuse tweeted Friday morning. Fitzpatrick said the 16-year-old was a "resident of a juvenile facility" and was on furlough from the facility on the day Brexialee was killed.
A North Carolina couple are accused of performing an amateur exorcism on their 4-year-old son, who later died. Skyler died Jan. 9 "from injuries related to the abuse sustained by his parents," authorities said. The sheriff's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday. They are alleged to have restrained and isolated the child and performed an exorcism, the station reported. They had other children in their custody who are now in the care of the Department of Social Services, the sheriff's office said.

"DNA testing of a relative confirmed this after countless hours of investigation into her family tree and contact with distant family relatives." Four people were arrested in connection with the alleged rape of Madison Brooks, a Louisiana State University student who was fatally hit by a car shortly after the suspects dropped her off in an East Baton Rouge subdivision. Lee is Washington's uncle, the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office said. Carver told investigators that he, his friends and Lee did not know Brooks prior to meeting her at Reggie's, the report said. When they were about to leave, Brooks asked for a ride home, Carver told detectives. He told CBS affiliate WAFB of Baton Rouge that a rape did not occur.
Two Memphis, Tennessee, fire department personnel were "relieved of duty" while an internal investigation was conducted into the death of Tyre Nichols, a Black man who died days after a traffic stop. Memphis Fire Department spokesperson Qwanesha Ward said the employees were "involved in the initial patient care" of Nichols but did not provide further details. Nichols, 29, was stopped by Memphis police on Jan. 7 for reckless driving, the department said. In addition to the fire department personnel who were relieved of duty, five police officers involved in the traffic stop were fired after an administrative investigation found they violated department policies, Police Chief C.J. A 76-year-old woman allegedly shot and killed her terminally ill husband at a Daytona Beach, Florida, hospital following a pact police said the couple made several weeks ago. Officers were called to AdventHealth Daytona Beach Saturday for a report of a person shot, the police department said in a news release on Twitter. When police arrived, the woman was barricaded in her husband's 11th-floor room. Young said the 11th floor is for terminally ill patients, and praised officers for getting people out safely. "This was somewhat of a logistical nightmare which is why again I'm very, very proud of my team," he said.

Former Navy SEAL Daniel W. Swift was killed in Ukraine on Wednesday, a Navy official told NBC News Friday. Swift had been in active deserter status since March 11, 2019, the Navy Absentee Collection and Information Center said. The center said it did not know why Swift was in the eastern European country that has been at war with Russia for a year. Swift was a special warfare operator 1st Class and enlisted in the Navy on June 28, 2005. Swift is the sixth American known to have died fighting in Ukraine, according to State Department statements and reports from individual families.
A New York man convicted on charges that he moved into his daughter’s dorm room at Sarah Lawrence College and abused students at the elite school in a nearly 10-year scheme was sentenced Friday to 60 years in prison. Manhattan federal court Judge Lewis J. Liman told Lawrence Ray, 63, that his crimes were "particularly heinous." A Minnesota hospital agreed to pay $180,000 to a woman who said the hospital refused to hire her for a job because she is deaf. Vogt said that in July 2020 she applied for a role as a greeter at North Memorial Health. The manager told Vogt that they would need to contact North Memorial Health about her disability, the suit said. A spokesperson for North Memorial Health could not immediately be reached Wednesday. The hospital said it was never given a name for the candidate and has no knowledge of what the manager told Vogt.
A 13-year-old girl led Nebraska troopers on a high-speed chase for nearly 20 minutes before authorities were able to stop the vehicle and take her and an 11-year-old passenger into custody, Nebraska State Patrol said. The teen driver allegedly accelerated and fled troopers "at a high rate of speed," according to the release. "A short time later, the trooper was able to successfully perform a tactical vehicle intervention to bring the vehicle to a stop," Nebraska State Patrol said. Troopers searched the vehicle and located a firearm and a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, according to the news release. Nebraska State Patrol did not release further details, including whether the girl and boy will face charges.
Disturbing video captured the moment a man tried to pull a barista through a drive-thru window in an alleged kidnapping attempt in Washington state. The Auburn Police Department posted the video on its Twitter page Monday and asked the public for help identifying the man. In the footage, the man grabs the woman's arm as she hands him what appears to be money. Police said the man "attempted to drag the victim through the window using a looped ziptie device." The woman yanked her arm back and the man drove off in a pickup truck.
Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, D-Ore., was briefly hospitalized Friday night after she and her husband were hit by a car in Portland, according to her spokesperson. Natalie Crofts, Bonamici's communications director, said in a statement shared to Twitter that the incident occurred as the lawmaker and her husband, Michael Simon, were walking across a street after leaving an event. A woman turned into Bonamici and her husband "at low speed and knocked them down," according to Portland police. Bonamici was treated at a hospital for a concussion and laceration to her head while Simon was treated for minor injuries, Crofts said. The lawmaker is a leader on the Education and Labor Committee and chair of the Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Human services.

A second person was arrested in connection with the disappearance of a 4-year-old girl in Oklahoma, authorities announced Friday. He is waiting for extradition to Oklahoma, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said in a Facebook post. The body of an 82-year-old Florida woman who went missing in September during Hurricane Ian was recovered Tuesday, the Lee County Sheriff's Office said. A contract debris removal company cleaning an area near Fort Myers Beach found the remains of Ilonka Knes "deep within the mangroves," Sheriff Carmine Marceno said at a news conference Thursday. Lee County Sheriff's Office"These areas are impassable by boat and they’re not visible by the air," he said. Knes lived in Fort Myers Beach with her husband, who had previously been found dead. A 4-year-old girl in Oklahoma was reported missing shortly after a postal worker found her 5-year-old sister wandering alone near their Cyril home, authorities said. Multiple law enforcement agencies have been looking for Athena Brownfield since Tuesday, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) said in a Facebook post. The postal worker contacted Cyril police, OSBI said. An offensive lineman with the U.S. Air Force died after experiencing a "medical emergency," the Academy announced Tuesday. In May 2021, he graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School. Lt. Gen. Richard M. Clark, the Air Force Academy's superintendent, said Brown was "well-respected in his squadron." Brown was also remembered as a "standout" offensive lineman on the school's Falcons football team, playing in their 2021 and 2022 seasons. One person was arrested following a shooting Friday at a Virginia elementary school that left a teacher injured, police and the Newport News school district said. The incident occurred around 2 p.m. at Richneck Elementary School. Ten people were injured following a shooting that witnesses say happened during a music video shoot for rapper French Montana. Shots rang out just before 8 p.m. Thursday outside of a Miami Gardens restaurant. Witnesses said the chaos unfolded as French Montana was filming a music video, according to NBC Miami. Footage showed the rapper sitting in a car outside The Licking restaurant before shots were fired. They said they had not confirmed that the shooting happened during the filming of French Montana's video.
